Apple’s latest Pro models come equipped with enhanced cameras, a larger battery, and the iPhone’s first high-refresh-rate display.
Editor’s Note
As of Nov. 19, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max boast the best cameras and battery life of any iPhone. These models offer high-end features like Pores video recording, earning them a CNET Editors’ Choice Award. Here’s our original review from September.
Consistent Pro Features Over the Years
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max continue Apple’s trend of offering two Pro models. Priced the same as the previous year’s versions, they come with updated cameras, a bigger battery, and the A15 Bionic chip. Apple has differentiated its Pro models by adding features like a high-refresh-rate display, making them truly professional-grade compared to regular iPhones.
Flexible Options for Different Needs
The 13 Pro and Pro Max highlight that there’s no single iPhone for everyone. Both now feature the same camera array and differ only in size, battery life, and price.
Pricing and Storage Options
The iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999 (£949, AU$1,699), and the 13 Pro Max at $1,099 (£1,049, AU$1,849) for 128GB. For the first time, a 1TB storage option is available, costing $1,499 (£1,449, AU$2,569) for the 13 Pro and $1,599 (£1,549, AU$2,719) for the 13 Pro Max.
Design and Build Quality
Maintaining the squared-off look, the phones feature glossy stainless-steel sides and matte finishes in graphite, gold, silver, or Sierra blue. The notch is 20% smaller, making it less intrusive. Both models are slightly heavier, with the 13 Pro gaining 15 grams and the 13 Pro Max 12 grams, but they maintain durability with Apple’s Ceramic Shield and an IP68 rating.
Stellar Promotion Display
The 13 Pro has a 6.1-inch display, while the 13 Pro Max boasts a 6.7-inch screen. Both are brighter and feature ProMotion, allowing refresh rates from 10 to 120Hz, which significantly enhances the visual experience.
Enhanced Telephoto Camera
The main camera has a larger sensor with a faster f1.5 aperture lens, the ultrawide camera now includes auto-focus, and the telephoto camera offers a 3x optical zoom. These updates lead to brighter, sharper photos and faster shutter speeds, improving action shots.
New Macro Mode
The new macro mode automatically activates when close to a subject, using the ultrawide cameras autofocus. This feature performed well in bright and medium lighting, capturing detailed close-ups of food and objects, although it struggled in low light.
Cinematic Mode: A Fun New Feature
All iPhone 13 models include Cinematic mode, creating 1080p videos at 30fps with a dramatic depth-of-field effect. It allows for manual focus adjustments and is best used in good lighting. While not perfect, it’s enjoyable and offers creative possibilities.
A15 Bionic Power
The new A15 Bionic chip powers the Pro models, featuring a five-core GPU compared to the four-core GPU in the 13 and 13 Mini. This performance enhancement handles gaming, photo editing, and multitasking effortlessly.

Longest Battery Life: iPhone 13 Pro Max
The iPhone 13 Pro Max boasts the longest battery life among all the phones we’ve tested. Both the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max come with larger batteries, making it easy to get through a full day, even with heavy use involving photography and videography. The iPhone 13 Pro consistently lasts a day on a single charge, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max can stretch up to two days. These new models surpass the battery life of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.

CNET’s Battery Test Results
In CNET’s battery test, which involves playing a looped video in Airplane mode with the screen at half brightness, the iPhone 13 Pro lasted 22 hours and 2 minutes. The iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted an impressive 31 hours and 19 minutes, setting a new record for battery life in any phone tested by CNET.
Improved Battery Performance
The extended battery life isn’t just due to the larger battery. The LTPO display, which automatically adjusts the refresh rate, plays a significant role. Unlike the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max that have a fixed 60Hz refresh rate, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max can drop to as low as 10Hz, conserving power.
Exploring iOS 15 on iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max
iOS 15 Features
iOS 15 on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max introduces a slew of new features without disrupting the familiar interface. The new Focus mode is a standout feature. For a detailed overview, you can check our iOS 15 review.
Photographic Styles
All iPhone 13 models include a new feature called Photographic Styles, allowing you to choose between standard and four styles: Vibrant, Rich Contrast, Warm, and Cool. These are more sophisticated than traditional filters, as the phone analyzes different parts of the subject to apply the desired look without, for instance, making skin tones appear unnatural. This adjustment happens in real-time as you take the photo.
Apple Pores Video Codec
The iPhone 13 series is the first to support the Apple Pores video codec, ideal for professionals who need high-quality video files with lower compression, perfect for editing in software like Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere Pro. The large file sizes associated with Pores make the 1TB storage option particularly valuable. However, Pores wasn’t available for testing at launch and is expected to be released later this year.
Future Testing and Reviews
There’s still more to explore with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Our team at CNET will continue to conduct extensive camera tests, drop tests, and battery tests. Stay tuned for more detailed reviews and insights.
